Pentland Ferries Football Times Cup 1st Round
Golspie Sutherland 3-1 Inverness Ath
King George V Park, Golspie
An early first half strike along with a double in the second half helped Golspie Sutherland to a 3-1 victory over Inverness Athletic in the 1st round of the Football Times Cup this afternoon.
Right from the off it was obvious that this was going to be a hotly contested game with both sides pushing forward it became a real end-to-end battle during the early exchanges, but it was Golspie who would take the lead. With only 9 minutes on the clock Robbie Murray found the back of the Inverness net to give the home side a perfect start and leave Athletic looking for a way back into this cup tie. Both sides continued to created chances during the rest of the first half, but neither side could find the killer touch in front of goal to trouble the scorers.
Half Time - Golspie Sutherland 1-0 Inverness Athletic
Both sides come out for the second half looking to take a firm grip of the cup tie, with a place in the Quarter Final against Nairn County U20s awaiting the winner. Once again it was a Golspie who started the stronger, and it was not long before they had the ball in the Inverness net for a second time. Midfielder Graham MacNab hit a wonder strike into the top corner of the net, giving Athletic keeper Ryan Hunter no chance, and doubling Golspie lead in the cup tie. That man MacNab would once again be the thorn in Athletic side ten minutes later when he again found the net to all but book Golpsie’s place in the Quarter final. Athletic we able to final get a reward for all their hard work when substitute Andy Macdonald riffled in a cracking left foot shot from the each of the box, but it was too late to stage any kind of fight back.

Manager Shane Carling said “It was a strange one today, I felt we played very well in parts and the team never stopped working the whole game. It was a very even first half that I feel that had we been a bit more ruthless in front of goal we may well have been in front at half time. The second half was much of the same but to be fair to Golspie they were just more clinical in front of goal today which in the end won them the cup tie”
Athletic move on to next week when its back to Macleod and MacCallum League action, when they welcome Halkirk to Pavilion Park for their first home game of the season.
