Bunillidh Thistle 0-3 Inverness Ath
Couper Park, Helmsdale
A brace from Phil Macdonald along with an Ally Velzian header was enough to secure Inverness Athletic a hard fought three points against Bunilidh Thistle yesterday at Couper Park.
Like the previous two weeks Athletic started the game strongly, and had the majority of the early play, as they looked to build on thier recent wins against Halkirk United and St Duthus. The front four of Phil Macdonald, Ryan Dow, DJ Macphee and Russell Macintyre were causing the Bunillidh defence a lot of early headaches with their pace and movement, and It would not be long till their hard work was rewarded. After some good work down the left from Ryan Dow and Russell Macintyre, the ball fell to DJ Macphee in the box who in turn picked out Phil Macdonald at the back post to give Athletic the lead with a neat finish. Athletic continued to battle against the wind and create chances for the remainder of the first half but were unable to find a way past the young Bunillidh keeper Cameron Yuill and his defence, who were keeping their side in the game. Bunillidh grew into the game after the early onslaught from Inverness, carving out a few chances but were unable to really trouble Sandy Stephen in the Inverness goal.
Half Time - Bunillidh Thistle 0-1 Inverness Athletic
A tactical tweak at half time from the Manager saw Inverness control large periods of the second half. They continued to create numerous goal scoring chances but were still unable to find a way past the home defence. Eventually, just after the hour mark, the Inverness pressure took its toll. Phil Macdonald doubled his and Athletics tally for the day with a tidy finish at the back post after a Ryan Dow corner eluded the home defence. The game was over as a contest on 70 minutes when Ally Velzian, who was making his first start for the club, rose above everyone to bullet home a header. Inverness continued to create several opportunities but in the end were unable to add to the score line.

The Manager said “I am delighted to get our third league win of the season today. I thought the boys battled well in the first half against the wind and although we were not playing brilliantly we fully deserved to be in front at half time. The second half was really good from us. On another day we could have scored a few more but in the end, we are just happy to get the win.”
