Macleod & MacCallum North Caledonian League
    Inverness Athletic 1-3 Halkirk United
    Inverness Royal Academy 3G, Inverness

It was another disappointing afternoon for Inverness Athletic in the Macleod & MacCallum North Caledonian League yesterday, as Halkirk United condemned Shane Carling’s side to a fourth league defeat of the season.

In what was very wet conditions in Inverness, it would be Athletic who seems to find their feet the quickest, creating a few early chances and were unlucky not to be in front.

The home side had a big appeal for a penalty turn down with 15mins on the clock. Ryan Ingram was sent through on goal and nicked the ball past the on rushing keeper who subsequently upended Ingram but the ref decided no penalty, much to the home sides disbelief.

Halkirk slowly started to grow into the game and just after the half hour mark they were in front. A sweeping counter attack move by the visitors ripped open the home defence and Kyle Henderson was there to apply the finishing touch and put his team one up as he side footed past Hunter in the home goal.

The visitors were not in front for long. Just two minutes after they went behind Athletic were level. Phil Macdonald latching onto a beautiful James Murray flick to guid the ball past the onrushing United keeper and send the sides in level at the break.

Macdonald, seen here in action against Halkirk last season, drew his side level just before the break

The second half kick off and it would be Halkirk who came out of the traps the quicker. James Macintosh put The Anglers back in front just two minutes after the restart. A horrendous mix up at the back by the home side left Macintosh all alone in the box with a simple tap in to put his side back in front.

Once again Athletic started to play when going behind and had numerous chances to get back into the game, but a combination of poor finishing and a poor final ball made sure that they did not affect the score line, and they would be made to pay.

With 75 minutes on the clock Halkirk United further stretched their lead. Ben Gordon was give plenty time and space at the edge of the box to hit a cracking strike into the top corner of the net, giving the home keeper no chance.

The game fizzled out after that goal, with both sides creating very little and Athletic looking void of idea of how to get back into the game as Halkirk United saw the contest out and took all three points but up the A9.

Manager Shane Carling had his said on another defeat for his side “It seems like we are repeating ourselves but we were not good enough. We were poor at the back and our finishing and final ball today was awful. Yes, ok we had spells in the game where we played well but that’s not good enough at this level. Halkirk Utd deserved the three points today because they worked harder and wanted it more. Simple as that. We will get that lads back in this week and lift them up for the visit of Thurso next Saturday”
